Chat
Answer language, voice-input language, answer depth and the task list in Code and Cowork
Settings, Chat holds four settings that shape how the assistant answers you.
Answer language
The language DeutschlandGPT prefers to answer in, regardless of the language you write in. This one belongs to your account, so it also applies in the browser and on your other devices.
It is a preference, not a hard rule: if you explicitly ask for an answer in another language, you get that language.
Voice input
The language used for transcribing speech, both for the microphone button in the composer and for Dictation. Automatic lets the transcriber detect the language, which is the right choice when you switch languages during the day.
Set it explicitly when you always speak the same language. Automatic detection occasionally guesses wrong on a short recording of a single word, and a fixed language cannot.
This setting also belongs to your account.
Answer depth
How thoroughly reasoning-capable models think before they answer: low, medium or high.
| Level | When it fits |
|---|---|
| Low | Short questions, reformulations, lookups. Fastest, cheapest |
| Medium | The default for everyday work |
| High | Analysis, tricky bugs, decisions with several trade-offs. Noticeably slower |
The setting is the default for new conversations. In an individual conversation you can change it in the header, and in Code and Cowork with the /effort command. Models without a reasoning mode ignore it.
Show task list
Shows the assistant's list of work steps as a pinned bar above the composer in Code and Cowork, with one entry per step and its state: open, in progress, done or skipped.
Switched off, the assistant does not get the tool at all for this app, so it has no way to produce a list. It is also told not to write a stand-in checklist into the conversation instead, which is what made the earlier version of this switch feel like it did nothing.
The switch only appears if Code or Cowork is enabled for your account, since there is nothing else that produces a task list.
