Incognito chat
A private chat that does not appear in your history and is only stored until 24 hours after its last message
An incognito chat is meant for questions you do not want to find in your history again. It appears nowhere in your list of chats and is deleted automatically.
Start an incognito chat
Click the ghost icon at the top right. Incognito mode opens in the whole window: Incognito at the top, "You're incognito" below it, and the input field has a dashed border. The sidebar and the chat actions are hidden.
The ghost icon is only there in an empty chat. A chat that already has messages cannot be switched to incognito afterwards, and an incognito chat cannot be turned back into a normal chat.
What an incognito chat does differently
- No history, no search: the chat does not appear in the sidebar, in search or in projects, neither on the web nor in the desktop app or the mobile app.
- Your settings still apply: what you entered under Settings → Account (about you, custom instructions) applies in this chat too.
- No sharing, pinning or moving: these actions are not available in an incognito chat.
- Deleted automatically: 24 hours after the last message, the chat, its messages and the files uploaded or created in it are permanently deleted.
As long as the chat exists, you can reload the page and keep writing. Tools, files and web search work as in any other chat. Links in the chat open in a new tab so that you do not leave the chat by accident: it is not listed anywhere, so you would not find it again.
Is an incognito chat stored?
Asked "Are you storing my data?" in an incognito chat, the answer is: yes, but only for a while. So that you can keep writing and reload the page, the chat is kept on our servers like any other chat until it is deleted. It is deleted as soon as one of these happens (with the X and with a new chat it ends at once and can no longer be opened; it is deleted shortly after in the background):
- 24 hours after its last message,
- when you click the X at the top right,
- as soon as you send the first message in a new chat.
The chat, all its messages and the files uploaded or created in it are deleted. What remains afterwards is under "Good to know".
End an incognito chat
Click the X at the top right. A new chat opens at once; the incognito chat has ended, can no longer be opened and is deleted shortly after in the background. The same happens to the previous incognito chat as soon as you send the first message in a new chat.
Good to know
- Usage counts against your quota like any other chat. After deletion, usage and operational data remain, such as how much was used for quota and billing and which tools ran, but not the chat's messages or files.
- In organizations, administrators can switch incognito chats off with Allow incognito chats under Organization settings → Data → Data & retention. The ghost icon then does not appear.
- Organizations that must keep their chats do not offer incognito chats.
