Step Limit
Set how many steps one answer may take, per model, and how your organisation can cap it.
A step is one model call with the tools the model uses in it, for example a search, an integration or code. Every answer has a limit on its steps. Without your own setting, the default applies: 50 in chat, 30 in Code, 20 in Cowork and 40 for scheduled tasks.
Your Step Limit
Under Model preferences → Step limit you set how many steps one answer may take at most. Your limit applies in chat, in Code, in Cowork and to your scheduled tasks.
- Your default limit: applies to every model without its own rule. Leave it empty for the default.
- Rules per model: with Add rule you give selected models a limit of their own, for example many steps for a cheap model and few for a large one. A model can only be in one rule. When Auto picks a model, that model's rule applies too.
You can choose 1 to 1000 steps. If your organisation has set a maximum, it is shown at the setting and you cannot go above it. Save with Save.
More steps means one message can cost more. If you set a high limit for an expensive model, the page warns you: one message can then use up your monthly budget, and the model may not be able to give a final answer. We do not recommend high step limits with large models.
When an Answer Stops
When an answer reaches your own limit, DeutschlandGPT offers Continue but does not continue by itself, and the notice says that the limit is your own setting, for example You set your own step limit of 200 for this model., with a link to the setting.
Once the monthly budget is reached, the answer is stopped, even in the middle of the work, see Long tasks. If you raised the step limit for that model above the default yourself, the notice adds that, because with a high step limit a single message can use a large part of your monthly budget.
A scheduled run follows your step limit too. When a run stops at a limit you set yourself, or the budget stops a run whose limit you raised, the run list says so.
For Organisations
Under Chat defaults → Maximum step limit an administrator sets how many steps one answer may take at most in the organisation, in chat, in Code, in Cowork and for scheduled tasks. The cap applies to all members: it limits the defaults as well as the members' own step limit. Leave it empty for no cap, then click Save. A low limit bounds what a single message can cost. Independently of it, every answer stops once the member's monthly budget is reached, unless pay-as-you-go takes over the rest (in chat, Code and Cowork; a scheduled task does not switch to pay-as-you-go mid-run).
